Rebuilding [Open]

[A few days after the Nox escaped the sewers and the Mayor sends out her missive, construction crews are on site at the college campus, beginning repairs on the sinkhole. While they're grateful to the outsiders using their magic to keep the Nox away, they're still a little leery of them. With everything that's happened, can you blame them?]

[Whether you're there to help with construction or security duty or just walking by to see what's going on or to bring your hardworking friend lunch, it's definitely an interesting place to be. Maybe someone has theories about how the Nox got out of the sewers...]

[ Greg hadn't actually seen the damage firsthand until now. It's not like this is the first time there's been damage left behind from a Nox attack, but this feels... different. ]

I guess... they got tired of using portals...?

Well, we don't know what's down there, aside from... probably a lot of Nox. It's probably better not to go up against those guys on your home turf, y'know?

That is exactly what we ought to do! They shall never expect such an offensive!

...or at the very least we should learn more about them.

Yeah... I wouldn't expect it, either.

What do you think there is to learn about them? You think they've got some shadow creature society down there? [ Out of most people, that would sound sarcastic, but Greg's genuinely asking. He's not ruling out anything. ]

Or we may simply find a nest to eradicate! My sister's magic is particularly effective against them, I am certain we could do it.

[ On the one hand, two of the most skilled magic users around leaving them behind is a little worrying, but on the other... that's sort of how it's always worked, isn't it? ]

Do you think the comms work down there?

...does altitude affect electronics?

Nnnnot so much altitude as concrete. It usually will block the signal for electronic stuff. Then again, I think the comms are part magic? So maybe it works? But then the Nox magic might interfere with that too, so...

[ He rubs at his pate, effectively talked himself in a circle. ] I got no clue.

[Heather looks at the hole in the ground doubtfully, and at Greg even more doubtfully.]

I mean they've been down there for a while. I guess they got tired of the subways?

Even they get tired of hanging around in the dark all the time, huh?

[He sighs, and scratches at his beard.]

Hey, look on the bright side. At least we know where to look out for 'em.

[ In front of a school. Not... the best silver lining, he can admit. ]

I guess. I mean, I wouldn't want to.

[She looks back at the hole in the ground, even more doubtful. Those were not the most reassuring of words.]

Yeah, but...they're in the whole subway, aren't they? And the mayor said to stay away from manholes, too...

[Oh, that's right, she did, didn't she. Heather takes a few steps back from the hole, just in case.]

Ah... yeah, I guess...

[ Heather's nervousness inspires Greg to take a step back. Just because he can fight doesn't mean he likes the idea much.]

Um. But! Uh. Hmm. [He rubs at his face. C'mon, man, optimism.] Uh, I'm Greg.

[Ooh, that doesn't inspire confidence. Heather looks at him, then back to the hole, then at him, then the hole, then him. She's obviously having a rough time gathering her courage.]

Um...Heather.

[ He watches her discomfort, relating all too well. After a moment, he gives her a weary smile. ]

It's gonna be all right, Heather. We're all on the same side, yeah? So we'll figure something out.

[She casts a very doubtful look back at the hole. Yeah, that sure looks 'all right' to her.]

If you say so...

[She jumps as the clock tower chimes and looks around.]

Oh, wow, that went fast. I should go - the, uh. The shop's not gonna mind itself! [She tries for a smile and almost makes it.]

Oh! Um, all right.

[ Is it just him, or is she even jumpier than he is? ] Is it far? I can walk you, if you want.

[ You know Greg, some people might find an older man offering to walk with a younger woman super creepy. ]

[Ohhhhh is she ever stuck.]

It's just by the activity center, so not really? But, I mean, if you really want...

[On one hand, knowing the Nox are active is terrifying; on the other hand, what's Greg going to do if she says no?]

[ He spreads his hands, apologetic. He's clearly not wanted. ]

[Okay that's kind of a relief? Even if she feels kind of bad about it. Boy, she can't win today, can she.]

[And she's off, giving the hole in the ground a wide berth and heading towards the park. It's a shortcut, and she really does need to hurry back.]
