[ Those at the top of Lux Spire may notice things creeping in the shade of plants. These shadows are tiny, reaching the size of rats and no bigger, but take all shapes and formations. Small they may be, but fearless and curious: some of them might snicker and whisper amongst themselves as you pass, while others skitter away underfoot. They seem unwilling to go near the fountain.

Elsewhere, the shadows may reach the size of a cat, and are a little more aggressive. The darkness doesn't seem to be taking kindly to this new cure introduced to the city, and while not ready to launch a full scale attack, they seem to be causing a nuisance to the local citizens in retaliation. As annoyed as they are, these people don't seem too happy to see newcomers - though no one will explain why. ]

[Bruce looks over Bette as much as he can without being too rude. Blonde, pretty, young, and wearing an outfit that gets a raised eyebrow- especially the gauntlets- and another question added to an already lengthy mental list.]

[She isn't familiar at all.]

Good to finally meet you in person, Bette.

[He notices that hesitation and until she plays it off Bruce tenses ever so slightly, although he doesn't drop the smile.]

Wendy the-? Never mind. That was quick work. Care to give me the specifics?

[If she's at all uncomfortable about the look he's given her, Bette doesn't show it. If anything, the look doesn't make her nearly as uncomfortable as the one she gets from her Bruce sometimes. Truth be told, it's a marked improvement.

Hawkfire uniform or no.]

This must be so weird for you, Bruce. I'm sorry. i mean, it's weird for me too? Especially since your jaw is a lot less square, but I'd recognize those eyes anywhere. But. I kind of know you and you kind of don't know me. Yet. Keyword, though. Yet.

[She indicates the motley crew assembled behind them.] Eridan, the one with the horns? He can do some forcefield thing? That's really all we know so far. Not sure how it happened. I mean, we haven't been struck by lightning while holding chemicals or anything, you know? Well, that we know of, anyway. Anything weird happen with you?

Besides, you know. This?

[At the mention of his eyes, Bruce finds himself examining Bette's more closely, wondering if he's going to see anything familiar there. The idea of having relatives is an... odd one and under the circumstances, he doesn't see much evidence for it.]

[Still, he tries to be diplomatic.]

I'm sure we'll have plenty of opportunities to get to know one another while we're here.

[His eyes flick over the the group Bette gestures to. He recognizes Eridan from the welcome chat, but nobody else. However, the presence of another Alternian is interesting.]

I take it the forcefield isn't just something Alternians do? What exactly did he do, and have any of you been able to replicate it? [Bruce reaches up, cupping his chin in one hand. He's able to be honest when he says:]

Nothing besides "this." But I'm not sure what counts as strange anymore.

No, from the way he reacted, it was new to him. Like, he kind of freaked out. Didn't quite believe he had seen what he did, you know?

[She shakes her head.] Haven't tried to emulate it. Wouldn't even know how. [A small pause as she realizes she's gotten a step or two ahead of herself.] He was being attacked by a shadow rat thing, and so he went to defend himself. Me, I tried to shoot him with my flamethrowers - the shadowrat, not Eridan - but it didn't do anything.

[ His polite expression slips, making way for a concerned little frown. ]

If he can't control it, it's going to be a problem. Are you sure he didn't do anything special? Make some sort of gesture?

And Bette, why do you have flamethrowers?

I mean, it was kind of a mad lunge for the shadowy thing? And then this bubble of energy kind of just appeared. And it couldn't have been the shadow creature, because the shadow creature, well. It's powers would come in shadow form, wouldn't it?

[Because, really, that seemed logical to her.]

Uh. Oh. Umm.

Did I say flamethrowers? [Yes, Bette. Yes you did. Really good at this whole secret identity thing, aren't you, now that you're away from home?]

[Logical enough, but yeah, Bruce is more interested in another subject at the moment. He folds his arms and gives Bette a look that Dick Grayson would be familiar with.]

Flamethrowers. And a mask. And a costume. And a codename, "Hawkfire."

[He could also go on to mention the various other suspicious details mentioned in their conversation over the comm, but instead he lowers his voice so the others can't overhear and gets to the point.]

Bette, are you a vigilante?

So she can shoot fire at things?

Daniel is feeling arsey, largely because he now has a splitting headache for no reason. He is currently sat on one of the benches behind Bette, his hands on his face and Cam standing on the bench next to him, looking up at his friend and holding what appears to be a tiny claymore that is no longer crackling with electricity (if we could actually finish the fight, this was what Daniel was making without thinking - because who doesn't love improvised tiny electroswords?)]

I mean, it's sorta self explanatory, isn't it? though... [Daniel leans back onto his palms, headache quickly vanishing now that he has a now problem to think about. He begins to mutter, before pulling out the most heavily customized phone you have ever seen along with a stylus and starting to draw something.

Daniel's chatter, while largely directed at himself, rises and falls in volume, lapsing in and out of audibility.] ...you could probably adapt it... Maybe, no, that wouldn't work... Perhaps you could throw in a... Urgh. That won't work!... Depends how you want to use... [Unless someone interrupts his reverie, he probably won't be much of a conversationalist until he finishes whatever he's drawing/sketching/designing.

Cam, now satisfied that their friend is alright, has settled down into their equivalent of a sitting position, watching the newcomer with interest. Having a tiny robot stare at you might be a little disconcerting, but Cam is confident that Bruce will manage.]

[Bette might shrink under that gaze juuust a little bit. It's not unlike ones that Kate has given her in the past.]

I mean. Vigilante is such a strong word.

I prefer, you know. Crimefighter?

Also, "Batgirl" was taken and "Flamebird" had too much baggage attached to it.

[She does brighten up with Daniel comes into the conversation, though.]

Bruce, this is Daniel. Daniel, this is Bruce Wayne, who's sort of my cousin, a couple of multiverses removed or something.

Say hello, boys.

[Alas for Bette, the gaze is unrelenting.]

Crimefighter-

[Bruce doesn't sigh, but Bette will probably be getting the impression he really wants to.]

So, do you work with the Batman or are you a solo act?

[And then when Daniel comes in, Bruce contrasts with Bette's brightness by frowning deeper. He's not fond of being interrupted, to say the least, and he gives the other man a curt nod.]

[The robot and the phone both get brief glances as well, but Bruce is oddly unperturbed. Running a cutting edge tech company makes one used to such things.]

[Daniel doesn't reply at first, too engrossed in this new project to acknowledge people have said things at him, however, Cam decides that it'd be impolite to not reply, and pokes Daniel in the face with his sword (gently) in order to snap him out of it.] Ow! Watch it Cam!

Daniel, they are waiting for your input.

What? Oh! Right! [Holding out a hand for Cam to climb on, Daniel rises, placing the small robot atop his shoulder. Walking over, Daniel saves whatever he was drawing and pockets the phone.] I'm Daniel, like Bette said, and this is Cam.

A Pleasure

[He may not have Kate or Bette where he comes from, but damn if that expression doesn't remind Bette of Kate.]

I work with Batwoman actually. I was a solo act before, but then she took me under her wing to, ah, train me further. And then some terrible stuff happened that I'm going to conveniently gloss over because shame. And now I'm Hawkfire. Batwoman's partner.

Because I'm not a twelve-year-old in booty shorts. The word sidekick doesn't apply.

[And then there's that big, bright, beaming smile that Bette flashes Bruce.] I've gotten better at it since.

[Bruce looks as if he'd like to say something Stern and Disapproving, but fortunately for Bette it's at that moment that Cam pokes Daniel. The distraction causes Bruce's expression to soften to a small frown. Speaking quietly, he tells Bette:]

We'll discuss this later.

[He then turns to Daniel and Cam. He gives the robot an interested look before addressing Daniel.]

Your robot seems more advanced than most. Did you make it yourself?

[Daniel holds out an arm, which Cam scampers down, alighting upon his hand, which Daniel holds up so Bruce can get a closer look] I did indeed, though this isn't Cam's original frame.

I have been with Daniel for ten years now, and have been through several chassis due to both wear and tear, and the risks of our work. A smaller chassis makes it easier for me to keep Daniel on task as it allows me to remain on his person at all times.

Alright, thanks for rubbing it in. [Daniel rolls his eyes.] Anyway, on the subject of work; Where did that weird rat thing go? [Nice segue dumbass, it's almost like you don't want to go into the fact that the tiny robot who generally rides around on your shoulder when they're not the size of a motorcycle is basically your minder you massive nerd.] All I can remember is it showing up and then getting a nasty headache... [A bit odd huh? Considering that he doesn't remember making the sword that Cam is now holding during the middle of the fighting. The sword that Bette basically saw him make, though Daniel doesn't seem to have noticed it yet.]

[Bette blinks. That look. Those words. Her nose wrinkles. Could he be any more like Kate?]

So...what's the sword for then? Is he supposed to be like a battle bot or something as well?

Because that would actually be kind of cool. Maybe we can make me a fire-breathing robot phoenix or something.

[Bruce quietly listens to the others, for the most part. Looking properly at Daniel this time, he can see that the man's fairly young, on top of the robot having such an impressive AI- obviously, he's some sort of prodigy.]

[Two crimefighters, a supervillain, an alien, and a prodigy. Tacky Shades isn't looking for ordinary people.]

[...Also, the rat. Bruce glances around.]

Was this "rat thing" one of those shadow monsters?

Sword? What sword? [Daniel finally looks at the sword, actually realizing that it exists. He looks somewhat surprised.] I- I don't know, Cam didn't have it before... Cam, where did you get that?

You made it Daniel.

I... What? [Daniel looks more confused than ever. Daniel shakes his head now, attempting to refocus.] Whatever. We can sort out what happened later. Yeah, it's a safe bet to say it was one of the shadow things that bloke with the tacky shades warned us about.

So, you made swords.

Eridan made a shield thing.

My superpower better not be whipping up cookies or something equally useless.

And yeah, the it was a shadow rat. Which probably means there are shadowcats and shadowbunnies and shadow-everything-elses.

[Like shadowbats, Bruce.]

[So, Daniel doesn't have any memory of using his "gift?" That's more than a little worrying. Bruce examines the sword as best he can without leaning into Daniel's personal space bubble, before glancing at Bette.]

You seem more like the type to make explosives.

[And shadowbats??? Bruce knows nothing about those, hahaha.]

As long as they don't get bigger than rats. If Tacky Shades wasn't lying to us, defeating those things is our ticket home.

[Something that Bruce says sparks a piece of Daniel's memory, like remembering a dream. However, he is also inspecting the sword now, it looks as if it's made from various pieces of technology, fused together, but the seams normally present from welding are missing. The mechanism that lit it up with electricity earlier also looks slightly organic, as if the circuitry in the device formed itself with a mind of it's own.

At Bette's comment, Daniel looks up, another connection made in his mind.] Eridan seemed like a defensive sort of person, didn't he? And I work well with machinery and robotics, So maybe someone's abilities have got something to do with the personality or talents they have, like I suggested earlier. If I even have any [Daniel refuses to believe has has abilities, there's no proof, well, proof that he can remember...]

Whatever it is, based on the difficulty Eridan had with his abilities, they might be somewhat difficult to control at first, so if you do want to practice, or attempt to discover what they might be, I'd suggest finding an area where you won't be disturbed. Maybe... [Daniel begins to babble about open spaces and practicing and explosions in confined spaces for some reason, and he is totally not sorry. And yeah, someone might want to snap him out of it again.]

[Bette's glaring at you a little bit.] Explosives, huh? I might be a little wild and fiery, but I'm not that...explosive. I really need a thesaurus.

[Bette shakes her head and goes to interrupt Daniel's little reverie when a shadowrat comes barreling at her. She takes a few steps back in shock and, out of habit, points her gauntlets at the shadowrat. It shoots out twin flames of fire, one above the other. One's coming from the gauntlet. The other...is not. It's the second one that destroys the shadowrat.]

...Did...did you guys just...see that?

[And Bruce responds to Bette's glare with a slight shrug, then returns his attention to Daniel.]

[He listens for a bit, though once Daniel starts to babble Bruce considers interrupting. He glances at Bette first, to see how she's reacting- and notices the same shadowrat barreling towards her.]

Bette!

[Bruce reaches for her, moving automatically to pull Bette out of the monster's way, but stops short when fire starts shooting out of her wrists. He watches, wide-eyed, as the shadowrat writhes and dissolves under the heat.]

[When it's gone, he just nods his head at Bette's question. He's still visibly shocked, but a thoughtful edge is quickly forming.]

That wasn't just your flamethrower, was it?

[Daniel might be easily distracted, but he isn't blind. As fire shoots from Bette's wrists and hands, one of the jets coming from a launcher and the other coming from her hand itself, Daniel is snapped out of his reverie and lurches back to avoid the fire.

Watching as the shadow-monster is incinerated by the blast, Daniel's face slowly goes from shocked to an almost comical grin.] That was definitely not just her flamethrower. I'd say that that's your magical ability Bette. In this world, you appear to be a pyrokinetic, congratulations.

[Bette's just blinking and looking down at her hands. There's a bright sparkle to her eyes when she looks up, her mouth pulled into wide, exhilarated grin.]

You guys. I'm not just a crimefighter anymore. This could make me a legitimate superhero!

[Both Bette and Daniel look pleased by this development, which means it falls to Bruce to be the wet blanket of the three.]

It might be an effective way of destroying the monsters, but we don't know where this power comes from or how it works. How do we know it's safe?
